About Howard
Role / Occupation:
Filmmaker/lawyer
Location:
Dublin City
Biography:
I went into film-making in 2004 while working in the head office of a national charity, having become disenchanted over time with my legal career and seeking a more meaningful existence. As a first-year law student aged 17 back in the day, I had realised that I really wanted to be a filmmaker but there was nowhere to train in Ireland then and nothing happening here so eventually I 'settled' for the legal world after a sojourn of over two years as a drop-out in the UK (mainly London) failed to yield any openings into film. Aeons later in late 2003 I saw a last-minute notice in the IFC for a small role in a short film shooting in Ron Blacks bar, rang the number, got the part (my first ever) and after a day on set was smitten by the film-making bug all over again so, deciding it was now or never, from early 2004 I began looking for any work I could get on a film set. I did the portfolio preparation course in Film and Video Production at IADT-DL on Saturdays from October 2004 to March 2005 and studied screen acting with John Cantwell at the Irish Film Actors Studio during 2005/6 and I've done eight p/t Filmbase courses in filmmaking, one at NMTC and two in Belfast.

My goal is to be a writer/director and to that end I've been amassing as much experience and training as I can since 2004, teaching law occasionally p/t as time permits while I keep myself free for opportunities to learn how to make films. The mid-career change of tack has really re-invigorated my life: it's great to find a way to work at your original passion, however late, as law was only ever just a job (although I used to get paid regularly in those days, as I recall...). My uncle dropped out from chartered accountancy to become an Abbey actor, going on to have a career as a broadcaster on BBC Radio and in RTE; while working at the day job in London he also found time for roles as a supporting actor in over a dozen feature films (as per his listing on imdb.com) so maybe it's all down to my genetic inheritance. I blame my parents anyway. But then who doesn't?
Credits:
I've crewed on over thirty productions, mostly short films, in various positions incl as PM, PC, PA, 1st AD and 2nd AD, Camera Op, CA, SO, SA (mixer, boom op), locations scout and continuity/script superviser. I've also acted in about four dozen film and tv productions - mostly shorts - to prepare me for directing other actors. I'm always interested in adding to my experience of both crewing (esp) and acting work, depending on the project.
Favourite Films:
'Persona' (Ingmar Bergman), 'The Third Man' (Carol Reed), 'On The Waterfront' (Elia Kazan), 'Some Like It Hot' (Billy Wilder), 'Jules et Jim' (Francois Truffaut), 'The Pawnbroker' (Sidney Lumet), 'A Bout de Souffle' (Jean-Luc Godard), 'Point Blank' (John Boorman), 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?' (Sidney Pollack), 'Walkabout' (Nicolas Roeg), 'Klute' (Alan J Pakula), 'The Parallax View' (Alan J Pakula), 'Chinatown' (Roman Polanski), 'Days of Heaven' (Terence Malick), 'Diva' (Jean-Jacques Beineix), 'Wings of Desire' (Wim Wenders), 'Field of Dreams' (Phil Alden Robinson), 'Witness' (Peter Weir), 'The Fabulous Baker Boys' (Steve Kloves), 'Breathless' (Jim McBride), 'Blade Runner' (Ridley Scott), 'The Silence of The Lambs' (Jonathan Demme), 'Lost In Translation' (Sofia Coppola), 'December Bride' (Thaddeus O'Sullivan), 'Kings' (Tom Collins) ...(to be completed on death)
