Alessandra Usai has directed several well-received documentaries, and has been involved in the production of several more as assistant director and film editor. Her work on film has broad registers, from biographical documentary, to visual essays, to anthropological projects, to architectural research, to video-dance.. One of the projects she was involved in, the film La Piazza (The Square), was the Winner of the “Life” prize at the Milan Filmakers Festival 2007.

Alessandra has experience teaching Film Studies, in the context of a public administration education and research project in Villasimius, Italy. Her teaching practice involved various strands, teaching history of film, while assisting students in undertaking a practical filmmaking project: the creation of a written video.

Alessandra Usai has researched and filmed on a series of projects concerned with social justice and ecological issues, for example documenting the NGO project “Food for Life” in Vrindavan, India, or producing a film on ‘Food-consumer cultural changes’ and their effects. Much of her work as a documentary filmmaker has a strong anthropological basis, being concerned with the preservation of sidelined histories, experiences, and traditions, and often based on extensive interviews and interaction with local communities.

Training & Education:
Alessandra completed a degree in History of Cinema and Theatre from Milan State University, followed by a Masters in “Direction of Documentary Film” with two end-of-course projects on film conservation and film analysis. She has also completed the “History and Technique of Documentary Filmmaking” Course at the School of Cinema, in the Civic School of Milan. Alessandra has trained as editor in Avid and Final Cut Pro 7 studio (Motion and Color) at both the CTP school in Milan and at the RAI Broadcasting Studio.
