Different from the Others
Germany. 1919. Silent. B&W. 50 min. Original title: Anders als die Anderen Dir. Richard Oswald Cast: Conrad Veidt, Fritz Schulz, Reinhold Scheunzel, Magnus Hirschfeld Tuesday, 3 August 2010, at 6 pm Outhouse Theatre (105 Capel street, Dublin 1) A hypnotic thriller, Different from the Others is also a remarkable historical document. The flourishing of art and activism in Germany in the early years of the twentieth century came to a dramatic close in 1933, when the Nazi regime began to systematically destroy books, artworks, and films they considered too provocative or ‘decadent’. This extraordinary film miraculously survived, in a damaged copy which was discovered in 1979, and restored with the help of stills. Different from the Others is a landmark in gay/human rights filmmaking. The Film Qlub is a Dublin-based, not for profit club, offering one screening per month. The Qlub focuses on films of interest to the LGBTQ community and their friends. Anyone who supports that community and likes good films is welcome. The screenings are programmed around a common theme, and the first season, of ten screenings, focuses on silent films. There is free tea and coffee before the screening, and an open discussion on the film after. Film Qlub Day membership: 8 euro. Full Season Membership: 30 euro (unwaged)/60 euro.
