Could this be what's missing in Irish films?

That's exactly what's missing from irish films. 3 chicks kidnapping and raping some guy. Time to start acting methinx. I'd better get working on my "don't put that in there" face.

Aaron.

You already have that face. ;-)

I dunno - I got to thinking about the out-there films out of Australia in the last twenty-five or thirty years; Mad Max, Chopper, Priscilla, Romper Stomper... I know Ireland's only 20% the size of Australia (and doesn't have the locations and the weather that so suit film-making), but you think in that time we'd have come up with more than the Commitments. That's not to say that there haven't been some great Irish films, just not many that are right out there on the cutting edge.

Did you hear about this story?

http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/0824/austria.html

that's the kind of stuff that you could make a film out of. Sex slavery is harrowing and largely ignored as a film subject, sends a chill down my spine even thinking about her life, imagine seeing it in the cinema?

Yeah , was amazed yesterday when i saw it on the news. Very similar to an incident that happened in america where a 20yr old was kidnapped and held for seven years. She was completely brainwashed. The district attorney wrote a book about it, best true crime book ("The Perfect Victim" by Christine Maguire)i've ever read. The psycho's name was Cameron Hooker. ANyone interested, get the book, easons have it for just 10 euro. Its crazy. Really want to make a film based on it, i have seen some Law and Order where they use the story, but at the end, they say its completely fictional(The woman that was kidnapped would disagree) It became known as the Woman in the Box.

I suggested it to our crew to make an Irish Version about 8 months ago. We all were enthusiastic about it after the rest read the book, but due to other projects, we forgot about it, if anyone else would be interested in making something like this, get in touch with me.

Default Sometimes ignorance is bliss

Irish Cinema is missing a lot of things, I agree that most Irish films are like the commitments and intermission. We as directors, writers, producers are almost expected to produce commitment esque type films, but why?

I say ignorance to Irish film can be a blessing in disguise, use Ireland as a beautiful landscape, tune into Fresh Irish Talent, but we can do so much better in my mind!

It's simply a matter of getting in touch with one another and thinking outside the box

Not all of our films have to be about "feck this, feck that"

Now... feck off, ya fat ****!

There's a better one at www.smh.com.au

Mother hunts down her kidnapped son's dead body, floating in the Tigris, under fire - mortars and AK47s. Pulls the body from the water. Buries him. Gets her son's friends on the mobile phone to find out who gave his name to the insurgents. Gets a name, kidnaps the guy, beats a confession out of him, gets the names of the other eight guys involved, executes him. Rounds up a bunch of the dead kid's brothers, neighbours, cousins and the like, borrows weapons (borrows!), rounds up the eight guys, kidnaps them, then beats, stabs and shoots them all.

She's a 50-year-old mother of ten. She looks like Peig Sayers. Check it out. Astonishing stuff.
