Okay here's the thing. If I have a PAL DV deck and an NTSC DV deck can I just hook them up via firewire and record away, transferring a PAL tape to NTSC.
Does the signal coming into the NTSC deck have to be NTSC for it to record properly? |

the simple answer is, .... no.
you need a standards convertor (hardware) to do this to add extra frames and get rid of any motion artifacts that may arise. some dv decks, such as the sony dsr-11 and others, are pal/ntsc. this does not mean they can convert. ie.. the signal that goes to the ntsc deck must be ntsc (you can't trick it into thinkin pal is ntsc) in saying this however, there are ways to trick it. it won't be a pro job, but the WYSIWYG rule applies (what you see is what you get)... this is done through a video mixer and works for short durations.. (not recommended) anyway, that is irrelavent in your situation. you need either a hardware convertor.. or a high end software solution to do the job. hardware is generally the best way to do it. a cheap option, (providing there is not lots of horizontal movement in the shots) is to grab yourself a filter set from http://www.nattress.com/. you make an ntsc sequence and put the pal seq into it an apply the filter, then edit to tape on the ntsc deck. if you do need a proper hardware conversion, i can do this for you if required. hope this helps, mark |

Thanks Mark.
Yeah got an answer from a guy at work and he pretty much told me the same thing. I zoned out after a while and ended up just getting our executive producer to get it done in Telegael. |
