Default Blatant copy!

Ermm, great ad concept and I would applaud the sentiments of the makers at Coco TV... however this ad is a shot-for-shot copy of an ad that ran on MTV in the US a couple of years ago!

Sinead's Hand : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ULdaSrYGLQ

Original MTV ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2nsGtd7y3c

Do you reckon Coco asked publicinterest.tv for their permission to basically copy their idea?

Hey guys, this was based on 'Permission' by Public Service TV and is clearly credited on the MarriagEquality website - they used to run the US ad on the site and decided to do their own version. And yes, they got permission. And yes, Lisa Hannigan allowed her music to be used. It's for a good cause, and everyone worked for free.

As for the ethics of recycling an old ad, it feels more like a cover version of a classic song to me, and this new version - mainly thanks to the locations and the beautiful song - hits home to me a little more than the original, which I would never have seen otherwise.

But I would say that, wouldn't I..?

She's no Sinead anyway, I can tell you that much.

I think since the two ads are working towards the same cause it's not a big deal to be honest as it's all credited and above board.

And yes, you would have to say the Irish one is better. I think I agree although I do love the Cat Power song in the American version.

Just curious as to why you listen mostly to Norwegian music and which acts specifically.

Didn't you know that Norwegian music is better than all others? Doesn't matter whether it's pop, jazz or metal, so long as it's "Norwegian"!

I believe the norwegian metal scene has had a bit of a sullying of it's reputation in the last few years what with the murder, planned kidnappings etc...

Now I'm even more interested in seeing your film.

How close are you to being complete.

What's the good authority you refer to? The hughoconor you quoted appears to be the actor Hugh O Conor, who's also the guy in Sinead's Hand. If he says it was done above board then surely it was and the production company didn't steal Lisa Hannigan's song. They're a pretty big production company.

And why the innocent first post enquiring about the ad's details, only to reveal alleged "inside information" later?

Guys, I stand by everything I said, and wrote a lengthy post explaining.
However, I had a flip-think and I decided to delete my posts about this on here.
My reasons are that I believe in this cause, love Lisa's music and like the film, and don't want to continue taking this in a negative direction, even though my original question was not a loaded one.

If you wish to PM me about this please do.

Default Sinead's Hand

Hi there,

I can see that conversation has moved on from Sinéad’s Hand and music rights to Norwegian music and the like!

Just to set the record straight on Sinéad’s Hand, I was the person who gathered the team to make this short film and of course we sought and were given the necessary permissions by all involved from actors to music etc etc. And we were very clear from the start what it’s use would be and what its origin was with everyone we spoke to. All involved in the making of this film are professionals and have made many
TV programmes and films in the past.

The people behind the original short film ‘Permission’ are delighted with Sinead’s Hand, and as Hugh said everyone is credited on the Marriage Equality website, as they were at it’s first outing in the Gaze Film Festival in Dublin in August.

All the best
Linda

Hi Linda, thanks for posting this. I love the film myself, and also support what Marriage Equality is doing.
I took down my original posts yesterday as this is now cleared up. I can say that when I posted on here first there had been some initial confusion about the music in the piece (which is why I posted here asking source, as *I* got a phone call, asking about my posting it on my FB page). I just rang someone in Lisa's camp to clear it up on here, and while there seems to have been some initial confusion (hence my comments), it all got sorted and Lisa and the Band are very happy with and supportive of the Film.
