Default Cinephelia

Went to see the première of a comedy movie show called Cinephelia in Filmbase last night. Very funny and inventive, a pastiche of a film-review programme using hilarious and very well made inserts involving take-offs of famous films (including When Harry Shot Sally) Anyone else see it?

It was directed by George Kane for no money over the last three years and showed his skills across a wide range of styles. It was excellently shot (as usual) by Paddy Jordan.

Nice to see people trying different things and the turnout for the screening was a full house.

Saw this one too and it's pure magic.

Laughs all the way and it's layered with tons of subtle and sweet visual gags throughout - one of the funniest half hour bits of "telly" i've seen in yonks. Even the smallest of scenes has an extra gag hidden in the background (I'm thinking of the white-board in the "Se7en" pisstake - pure genius!).

Fair play to George Kane and all the crew for pulling it together - the writing is incredibly tight but it's all the more effective due to the brilliant genre-hopping camera style and how it folds in upon itself towards the end, creating the elusive "gag within a gag within a gag". Really enthused by this one - hope it all comes good, the funding flows in and we see a whole series on our screens before 2008. The only semi-negative comment that I heard on the night was that perhaps the gags are aimed a bit too much at film-lovers and less for the average joe soap?

Ah The Kane is a good man. Couldn't get to this due to work but sounds like it was good fun.

George had a text screening at The Attic Studio about 4 weeks ago and the feedback was pretty positive. I thought the guy playing the presenter was fantastic. Such a dry delivery.

My favourite segments were The Shortest Movie Ever Made and the interview towards the end with Brian McGovern.

I’d love to see this done as a series. GIVE THE MAN THE MONEY!!!

Totally agreed Craig - that rounded gag carried the piece so well and really introduced the presenter (who, ultimately, is the star) perfectly. I can see him having gripes with hundreds of "fake" directors, trying to get the one-up on them just because he's such a dry spiteful git! It's great stuff. And very very well put together.

How do folk find out about these screenings?

The show sounds really interesting. Kinda like a live action 'The Critic'
I would've liked to have seen it.

Most importantly, I heard that there was free beers at this screening. Is this true?

I always miss the free booze but did have the honour to play panicky doctor number 2 in the American Werewolf in Vitro sketch.

Well done George! Now if only he could remember that I don't take sugar in my tea at work then he'd go places!
